Jaya announces subsidy for poor Hindu pilgrims
CHENNAI, 15 MAY: In a first of its kind announcement, Tamil Nadu  chief minister  J Jayalalitha today announced subsidy of Rs 1.25 crore (as a grant) for poor Hindu pilgrims from the state going on pilgrimage to Manasarovar in China and Mukthinath in Nepal on the lines of the Rs 1 crore subsidy announced for Christians from the state in a novel announcement made in December last year for those making a trip to Jerusalem.
“The state government’s grant would be given to 250 Hindus from Tamil Nadu who are approved by Government of India’s ministry for external affairs for a trip to Manasarovar and 250 Hindus who go to Mukthinath in Nepal,” Miss Jayalalitha told the state Assembly in a statement. The state government would give Rs 40,000 per person out of the Rs one lakh cost that is expected to be incurred by each pilgrim for travel to Manasarovar and Rs 10,000 out of the Rs 25,000 that is expected to be the cost for each person for a trip to Mukthinath, she stated.
The Central government already pays a subsidy for Haj pilgrims from Tamil Nadu out of the state quota for around 5,000 pilgrims per year. sns
